The Jipmer Tertiary Burn Centre (JTBC) has commenced laser therapy which will provide faster healing and cut down infection risks for burn patients.
Inaugurating the facility under the auspices of the Department of Plastic Surgery and JTBC, Dr. S. C. Parija, Jipmer Director, said the service will be provided free of cost to all burn patients.
Dr. Ravi Kumar Chittoria, Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery and JTBC in-charge, said conventionally burns are treated with dressing which takes lot of time for the wounds to heal. Many of these patients die because of infection and complications related to Burn Wounds. With the help of laser therapy, burn wounds heal faster and it can control infection.

Dr. S. Jagdish, Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Trauma, said laser therapy would change the outcome in burn patients as it helps not only in healing but also helps in rehabilitating them by preventing stiffness, contractures and abnormal scarring.
The JTBC was started as a state-of-the-art tertiary centre in 2014 and the only one of its kind in the Government sector in South India with the funding and support by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of India.

Dr. Parija has suggested conducting a workshop on laser therapy to share the knowledge with practitioners in the region.
