Fishermen show black flag to Kiran Bedi

‘Non-implementation of welfare schemes’ irks them

Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi was shown black flags by a group of fishermen on Sunday during her visit to Thengaithittu harbour.

Ms. Bedi inspected the harbour after fishermen complained of hindrance in taking out their vessels because of accumulation of silt in the river mouth. While she was leaving the place after hearing the grievances of fishermen, another group of fishermen showed black flags as a mark of protest against the non-implementation of welfare measures, including distribution of free rice.

Protests during her weekend visits have become routine. Last week, irate villagers at Pandasozhanallur, protested against her visit. Last month, residents led by local MLA V. Manikantan staged a protest when her convoy passed through the Muthialpet junction. He was arrested for showing black flags. The MLA had moved a privilege issue against a police officer for alleged harassment.

The law and order problem arising out of her weekend visits was a topic of discussion in the recently held Assembly session.

Serious differences had emerged between the Lt. Governor and the ruling party over implementation of welfare schemes and loan waiver.
