About 70 farmers, led by farmers’ leader and president of Desiya Thenindiya Nathigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam P. Ayyakannu, on Monday submitted a petition to Superintendent of Police P. Saravanan at the District Police Office here seeking an expeditious investigation into the case of thousands of sugarcane growers being duped by Thiru Arooran Sugars in Chittur near Vriddhachalam.
Mr. Ayyakannu said that the management of Thiru Arooran Sugars, in connivance with officials of a nationalised bank, had duped 5,873 farmers of ₹150 crore.
The chairman-cum-managing director of the sugar mill, Ram Tyagarajan, had allegedly forged documents and taken loans in the name of farmers from Cuddalore and Thanjavur districts without their knowledge and in connivance with bank officials.

The bank officials had sent notices to farmers for defaulting on loans.
The mill had failed to settle the dues to thousands of farmers who supplied 14 lakhs tonnes of sugarcane to the mills for 28 months from the two districts, Mr. Ayyakannu added.
Earlier, farmers staged a demonstration in front of the DPO demanding immediate settlement of arrears and arrest of all the accused involved in the incident.
