Engineer arrested for extorting money

Muruganandham lodged a complaint with the police who kept a track of all phone calls made to his number.

A 26-year-old engineering graduate was arrested by the police on charges of trying to extort money from a businessman by making threatening calls.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) V.J. Chandran said the accused Raghunath made threatening calls to R. Muruganandham (52), owner of Kalki medicals on his mobile and landline phone and demanded Rs.30 lakh claiming that he was an associate of a notorious rowdy in the city.

Muruganandham lodged a complaint with the police who kept a track of all phone calls made to his number. They learnt that the calls were coming from Kambali Samy Madam Street and arrested Raghunath.

Mr. Chandran said Raghunath, an engineering graduate and son of a businessman in Villupuram tried to extort money from Muruganandham to overcome huge losses in his cinema theatre.

He had recently come out of jail after being arrested by the police for making similar extortion calls to a bus operator. Raghunath was produced before a local court and remanded to custody in the Kalapet Central Prison.
