Constable attempts suicide

A constable of the Puducherry police attempted suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle while on duty at the Treasury office in Bahour near here on Monday.

The constable identified as B. Balamurali (25) hailing from Kuruvinatham near Bahour sustained serious injuries on his face and has been admitted to Jipmer.

According to police, Balamurali was on night duty at the Treasury office. When his colleague came to relieve him, he was found in a pool of blood with bullet injury on his chin. He was shifted to the Puducherry government hospital and referred to Jipmer where his condition was said to be stable.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) V. Deivasigamani said Balamurali had attempted suicide and investigations were on. He said the constable had pointed the service rifle on his throat.

However, the bullet pierced his right chin injuring him. Although he could not communicate the police could understand through his gestures that he was suffering from stomach pain.

The police have registered a case against Balamurali on charges of attempting to commit suicide. Further investigations are on.
