An assistant professor of Pondicherry Engineering College, who indulged in malpractice in awarding marks to students, has been convicted and sentenced to two years’ rigorous imprisonment by a court here.
According to the Anti-Corruption Wing of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Chennai, during 2007, V. Prabhakaran, Asst Professor of Pondicherry Engineering College was nominated as an examiner for evaluation of answer scripts of BE/ B.Tech examination held in the month of Nov/ Dec 2007.
He conspired with B. Agilan and N. Perumal, students of the college. By abusing his official position, he struck off the originally evaluated marks of 24 to Agilan in the subject Mechanics of Solid-II and inflated it to 48, by even awarding marks for the questions not answered by Agilan.

In another instance, he inflated the originally awarded marks to Perumal in the same subject from 22 to 42.
The CBI charged that he did this knowing fully well that the marks awarded by him are not in commensurate with the answers written by them and it would be used for the purpose of declaration of result, as if they had qualified the examination.
After completion of investigation, two separate charge sheets were filed by the CBI against two different instances under various provisions of Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

On completion of trial of both the cases, the Principal Sessions Judge P.Velmurugan found Prabhakaran guilty and sentenced him to undergo two years’ rigorous imprisonment and also imposed Rs.40,000 fine on him while acquitting the two students
