The three felicitate the Speaker before entering the House

V. Saminathan (right), K.G. Shankar and S. Selvaganapathy, nominated MLAs, pay their respects before entering the Assembly in Puducherry on Wednesday.

In a repeat of what Prime Minister Narendra Modi did while entering the Parliament House after his party came to power at the Centre in 2014, the three nominated MLAs — V. Saminathan, K.G. Shankar and S. Selvaganapathy — on Wednesday entered the House after bowing down on the steps of the Legislative Assembly.

The three came to the House around 9.15 a.m and before entering the House, they touched the steps on the portico of the Assembly with their hands.

They then went to the Speaker’s chamber and honoured him by presenting a shawl.

Separate register

They signed a separate register prepared by the Assembly Secretariat for the three members.

The register was made available after Mr. Saminathan complained to the Speaker for not allowing them to sign on the register meant for elected members.

Later talking to reporters, Mr. Saminathan said the government had made their appointment on June 23 last year.

The government had denied them permission for more than a year, he said. “We would have worked as a bridge between Union Territory and the Centre and brought more funds. The government should have given permission to us to attend the Assembly immediately after the appointment,” he said.

He was confident of being able to get more funds from the Centre for the development of the Union Territory.
