Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi on Sunday instructed the Public Works Department to take up cleaning of the point of origin of the Bangaaru channel which feeds 13 tanks in Puducherry and eight tanks in Tamil Nadu.
It was decided that the PWD would award the work, following due process, of desilting the channel which sustains irrigation in these areas, as a pre-monsoon intervention.
The PWD will coordinate with Rural Development department and assess the number of feeder channels to be desilted under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA).

A coordination meet has been scheduled on Monday and work will begin by Wednesday, according to the decisions taken during the visit.
The Block Development Officer will hold a public meeting to maximise public participation and enrolment under the MNREGA while the Commune Commisioner would coordinate with rural development for desilting supply channels.
The desilting work for Sitheri main feeder channel that will benefit three villages of Kuruvinatham, Irulanjadai and Bahour will commence Wednesday.

The Lt. Governor was accompanied by PWD Secretary and department engineers, Director of Rural Development, District Collector, Commune Commissioner and members of the local community, a press note from the Raj Nivas said.
