Balancing household chores and passion

Painting exhibition under way at The Promenade showcases techniques employed by women artists

These are women who never let go of their passion for painting even as they juggled household chores, familial duties and workplace roles.

Their artistic expressions that come through in a variety of media such as acrylic, water colours and mixed media, are on display at an ongoing exhibition at The Promenade.

Though the theme of the exhibition, ‘Round the clock hands,’ carries the overtone of the burden that modern-day women, especially working professionals, carry, here it stands more for their delicate art, a labour of love.

Varied techniques

Gayathri, Kayalvizhi, Reshma and Sankida are alumni of the Bharathiyar Fine Arts College here. Though their exhibits come under a single roof, the themes or techniques that the artists employ are vastly varied.

For instance, if Kayalvizhi, a graphic designer, never touched a brush for her works, Gayathri dabbles in water colours and has also wielded a kitchen knife to great effect to etch our her work ‘Krishna.’

Sankida has a distinctive style of her own using rolls of magazine sheets while Reshma’s work is about portraiture and recreating vignettes of village life.

“As women artists, we feel the power of creation never stops with us, rather art becomes a medium to pass on our creations to the next generation,” says Kayal, whose work is more about relating to inner feelings of village dwellers.
