‘U.T. lost chance to get 50 extra seats’

A. Anbalagan

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has flayed the Congress government for not implementing 10% reservation for economically weaker sections in medical admissions.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, AIADMK leader in the Legislative Assembly A. Anbalagan said the government had lost an opportunity to get additional 50 seats in government medical college because of its failure to implement 10% EWS reservation.

If the government had implemented the quota, the medical colleges would have got additional 50 seats. The Congress government had done injustice to students, he said.

It was “astonishing” that the Union Territory, which was under the control of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, had failed to implement a Central legislation. Even States such as Tamil Nadu had implemented reservation for EWS, he added.

If the Union Territory continued to toe a different line, the party would urge the Union government to take action against the ruling dispensation, he said.

Taking a dig at Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, an ally of the Congress, Mr. Anbalagan said the alliance partner instead of criticising the Congress on power, water and property tariff hike, the DMK should show some courage and withdraw support to the ruling party.
