About 50 employees of Anglo French Textiles (AFT) mills owing allegiance to various trade unions on Monday picketed the mill demanding the Puducherry Government to increase the package offered to workers who had opted for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme.

A spokesperson of the Joint Action Council of AFT mills said the management had announced a package of Rs.25,000 to around 650 employees who had opted for the VRS scheme. The management should enhance the package offered to retired workers and take steps to commence the operations of the mill immediately.

JAC said that as many as 7,600 workers were on the rolls of the mills till 2000. However, the mill was pushed to the current situation due to the wrong policies of successive governments.

It is the responsibility of the Centre and the Puducherry Governments to bring the mill to its working condition. The Puducherry Government should obtain Rs.500 crore from the Centre to modernise and run the mill successfully.
