Clearing the confusion over the fee structure to be followed by the deemed universities for postgraduate medical courses, the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Thursday has directed them to follow UGC regulations, 2016, in the matter of fees.
Addressing the administration of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College campus, Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research and Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation, Sunita Siwach, Joint Secretary, UGC, in a letter of May 18, said: “It has been brought to the notice of the UGC that the deemed to be university is charging huge fees from students admitted in PG courses in medical or dental college under its ambit in the State of Puducherry.
“All the institutions deemed to be universities are regulated by the UGC (institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2016. The fee structure in institutions deemed to be universities has to be fixed in accordance with clause 6.1 of the UGC regulations.” The deemed to be university should follow the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2016, in the matter of fees in toto, as these regulations were mandatory in nature and had to be followed by all the deemed to be universities.

“The fee structure should not be contrary to the essence of UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2016 and deemed to be universities shall not engage in commercialisation of education.
“In case of non-compliance, action shall be initiated by the UGC against the deemed to be university under clause 22.0 of the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2016,” she noted.
The UGC has forwarded a copy of this letter to the Principal Secretary, the Chief Secretary, Government of Puducherry; R. Sridharan, Private Secretary to Lieutenant Governor; the Director (ICR), Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education, Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi, and V. Jeeva, Under Secretary (Health), Government of Puducherry.

Following the refusal of self-financing colleges to accept the fees, the Government of Puducherry on Wednesday had directed CENTAC Convenor to collect the demand draft towards fees payable to the self-financing medical or dental colleges for admission to postgraduate medical or dental courses for 2017-18. The second round of counselling will be held on Friday.
