Heeding the clarion call from the Prime Minister on the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission,’ a mass movement to create a clean India, many organisations and individuals in Puducherry have decided to take the broom into their hands.

On Friday, Lieutenant Governor A.K. Singh led a team, which included Local Administration Minister N.G. Pannirselvam in cleaning up the street in front of Bharathi Park. The government has also constituted a series of ‘sanitation day’ events on roads, in hospitals, toilets, institutions, restaurants, schools and colleges up till October 7.

On October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, the government will be observing the ‘Sanitation Pledge.’

The Swachh Bharat Mission aims for a clean India by October 2, 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Offbeat Apparels is taking up a clean up campaign on the street where their office is located, at Mariamman Koil Street on October 2. Meanwhile, a group of residents of Kurusukuppam have come together to take up the ‘Nice Bucket Challenge.’

Following the Ice Bucket Challenge and India’s Rice Bucket Challenge, the Nice Bucket Challenge is asking residents to bring buckets filled with dry waste like newspapers, bottles metal and plastic ware.

These will be sold to a scrap dealer and the proceeds will go towards cleaning of Kurusukuppam and rewards for Municipality cleaning staff, said Christopher Paul, who is organising NBC.

Material which cannot be reused or recycled will be used to install a public art piece. Residents interested in contributing a ‘Nice Bucket’ can contact the team from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m, at NBC Point, crossroads of Francois Martin Street and Advocate Chinnathambi Street, near the Government Primary School, Kurusukuppam.

Other events, upcycling workshops and competitions related to cleanliness will also take up place till October 2.
