Three students of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College, Puducherry, have bagged the national-level Open Source Hackathon contest organised by Tata Consultancy Services in association with Liferay, as part of the VJTI Technovanza 2016 fest, Mumbai.
Shyam Suganth J., Thamarai Selvan S. and Sarath R. topped a closely contested event, which included three preliminary rounds that tested a range of skills.
More than 2,000 teams had registered for the event through TCS Campus Commune portal and around 200 abstracts were filtered in the first round, from which top 10 teams all over India were invited for the grand finale on December 23 at Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, Mumbai.

The winners were awarded with the cash prize of ₹20,000 and were also offered an internship with the TCS Open Source Group and Environmental Sustainability, Health & Safety (ESHS) team. The college felicitated the winners.

The conference sponsored by the University Grants Commission (SERO) was attended by more than 300 participants from various parts of Tamil Nadu.
Dr. Baby Vega Isai Amuthu, Principal of Arignar Anna Govt. Arts College, Prof. G. Chandrasekaran, Dept. of Physics, Pondicherry University, and Prof. P.M. Anbarasan, Co-ordinator, Centre for NanoScience and Technology, Periyar University, Salem, were dignitaries at the function.
Prof. G. Chandrasekaran released the conference souvenir along with Prof. P.M. Anbarasan. The conference focused on recent trends in material science study. Nearly 100 research papers covering a broad spectrum of theoretical and experimental material sciences were presented in five technical sessions.

Dr. Ambedkar
The inauguration of Dr. Ambedkar Chair Annamalai University, and the commemoration of Mahaparinirvan Diwas of Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar was held recently at the Annamalai University.
The chief guest L. Mohammed Mansoor, Director-Local Administration, Govt. of Puducherry, in his special address, said that Dr. Ambedkar had recommended demonetisation once every ten years .
Dr. Ambedkar Chair was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. Manian, who also launched a website on the Chair. The dignitaries and the invitees paid floral tributes to the Father of the Constitution.

Stress Free’ 17 seminar held
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Arignar Anna Arts College for Women, Walajapet, organised a one-day international seminar – Stress Free’ 17 - recently. Resource persons discussed various aspects of stress and its management through sessions held on the occasion. Students from various colleges took part in the seminar. C. Fifty two students of Global Institute of Engineering and Technology in Melvisharam received offer letters during a campus placement that was drive conducted on December 31. The drive, which was held in association with JBM Groups and CAPARO, was to recruit mechanical engineering students for the post of graduate engineer-trainee. The students were screened for communication skills, and successful candidates had a personal interview with the HR managers, a press release said.
Competitions conducted
The Department of Chemistry of Sri Arcot Mahalakshmi Women’s College, Villappakam, organised ‘Chem Spark’ on December 29. Various competitions such as quiz, modeling, fun chemistry and poster presentation were held for students and prizes were awarded.
