Health services at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital at Kathirgamam was affected for a few hours on Wednesday as doctors went on a flash strike in protest against the recent suspension of a doctor.
It may be recalled that a duty doctor in the hospital was suspended after Deepa, a third-year student of Bharathidasan Government College for Women, died during treatment. The girl was taken by her family to the hospital after she complained of fever last Friday.
It is alleged that the doctor on duty had provided medicines that significantly dropped her pulse rate. Later, they had called the girl’s father to get medicines from a pharmacy outside the hospital since the government hospital did not stock them. The girl died immediately after the medicine was injected. An inquiry was conducted and the doctor was suspended.

Meanwhile, doctors in the hospital resorted to a flash strike seeking adequate protection and to mark their protest against the suspension of their colleague.
V. Govindaraj, Director of the institution, held talks with the agitators and pacified them, following which they withdrew their protest. He said a fair inquiry was conducted into the death of Deepa and a report was submitted to the government.
