The first-phase of counselling for the admissions to biology-based courses including MBBS and BDS in the government colleges, the colleges run by government societies and private medical colleges/ deemed medical universities will begin on Friday.
The Central Admission Committee (CENTAC) headed by Education Secretary G.Ragesh Chandra has made elaborate arrangements for the conduct of counselling at the campus of Government Engineering College, Pillaichavadi. CENTAC had released the rank list for medical, engineering and B. Pharm courses for the academic year.
The counselling for engineering courses will begin on July 2.

According to officials, CENTAC received the applications separately for biology-based degree courses and MBBS, and for BDS separately for this academic year since uncertainty prevailed over the conduct of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Examination for admissions to medical courses.
Following promulgation of ordinance by the Centre exempting the NEET for the current academic year, CENTAC also announced that there would not be NEET for admissions to medical courses.
Subsequently, CENTAC merged the applications to issue the common merit list for the biology-based degree courses including MBBS and BDS course.

Names missing
After releasing the merit list, it was found that a few names of meritorious students were missing from the list.
“After analysing, it was identified that the students have entered their Higher Secondary Examination registration number wrongly while filling the online applications. Hence some of the names were omitted in the merit list. This was purely because of the wrong entry by the students. We issued the new merit list after including these candidates on the CENTAC website,” said Mr. Ragesh Chandra, chairman of CENTAC, in a statement on Wednesday
As per the schedule, the CENTAC will take up counselling for admission of wards of ex-Servicemen at 9 a.m on Friday and that will be followed by the counselling for children/grandchildren of freedom fighters, meritorious sports persons, physically challenged and backward tribes in the forenoon session.
In the afternoon, counselling for other candidates from rank 1 to 211 will be held. The first phase of biology based course will conclude on June 29.
In another press note on Thursday, the convener of CENTAC said government orders issued in 2015 had announced that candidates who had already availed the seat through CENTAC last year should not apply this year. But many candidates have applied this year in spite of the announcement given in the information bulletin of CENTAC. He said the merit list was published by CENTAC after removing such candidates. Even if names of such candidates exist in the merit list of this year, they are strictly informed not to attend the counselling this year, and if they do, strict action would be initiated against them.
Meanwhile, V. Balasubramanian, president of Pondicherry Student and Parents’ Welfare Association, alleged inordinate delay on the part of CENTAC this year in publishing seat matrix and fee structure of private medical colleges/deemed universities, and that this led to confusion and apprehension among many aspirants.
