Four staff members of Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly abetting the suicide of a first year college student, Vinothini.

A total of five people were named in the FIR. But, the Revenue Department’s inquiry revealed that only four of them - Ernest Paul, Bavani, Geetha and Priyadarshini - were actually involved in the case.

They have been booked under Section 306 of the IPC for abetment of suicide, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Deivasigamani said.

The police are currently preparing a report and the case would be taken to the court soon. The four persons have been booked under a non-bailable Section, he added.

Meanwhile, students from various colleges across the town took out a rally to the Raj Nivas to submit a memorandum to Lieutenant Governor Virendra Kataria demanding the arrest of the staffers named in the FIR.

The memorandum also wanted private institutions under the purview of the government to be properly monitored so as to prevent mental and physical harassment of students in the Union Territory. They have also asked for a judicial inquiry to probe all student deaths in higher education institutions.
