One tourist footfall in the city could potentially boost the income of 12 enterprising individuals, according to P. Jawahar, Local Administration Department secretary.
Opening a short-term course on ‘Enabling Technologies to aid Smart Grid Framework’ hosted at Pondicherry Engineering College, Mr. Jawahar laid out the broad framework of the Smart City proposal for Puducherry and its status.
The key areas elucidated from the stakeholder of Oulgaret Municipality includes Tourism, Water management, Traffic and Transportation and Sewage and Solid Waste Management, he said.

The interdisciplinary short-term course, which was held under a Quality Improvement Programme, attracted about 35 participants from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Complimenting the PEC for organising a workshop with high current relevance, Mr. Jawahar encouraged the institution to contribute towards sustainable, financially feasible and actionable ideas for the Smart City Project proposal.
He also asked the hosts to submit a summary report on the outcomes of the Short-term Course.
M. Dhinadhayalan, Officer on Special Duty, Smart City Mission, provided a breakdown of the funding for the various components in Smart City. He also focused on some of the practical challenges in evolving a smart city in the Indian context. The officials have called for more participation from representatives of the Pondicherry Engineering College in providing key ideas for the Smart City Project proposal.
