Mumbai: Commuters, especially newcomers to the city, struggling to find their way around railway stations can take heart: Western Railway (WR) is planning to install informative maps to help commuters navigate stations and locate key passengers amenities at major stations.

The railway has installed maps at Churchgate and Mumbai Central station’s main entrance, and will be installing 60 more maps in 15 major stations, including Dadar, Andheri, Borivali and Kandivali. Each of these stations will get four illuminated maps.

The project, based on a directive from A.K. Gupta, general manager, WR, is expected to cost ₹10 lakh. Mr. Gupta had highlighted the need for maps on the suburban network. Aarti Parihar, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Mumbai), WR, said they will be selecting spots based on feedback from commuters. “Over the years, stations have become confusing as we have added decks and extra foot overbridges. First-time travellers or those new to the city often require assistance to navigate stations.”

The map will indicate the commuter’s current location with respect to the entire station with a ‘You Are Here’ sign. Key areas like the ticket booking office and Station Master’s room, amenities like washrooms, ATMs and exits will be clearly marked.

Ms Parihar said the maps will be put up at important spots. At Mumbai Central, another map will be installed in addition to the existing one near the ramp where paths diverge for suburban and outstation trains areas.
