Worry haunts injured at St. George Hospital

Ten people who survived the Himalaya foot overbridge collapse on Thursday remained admitted to St. George Hospital on Friday.

Of the 20 people who were brought to the hospital, three died, two did not need to be admitted, and four took discharge against medical advice. Of the remaining 11, Jinal Fofaliya (32), who was admitted to the ICU with severe head injuries, was transferred to JJ Hospital for a neurosurgery.

The youngest victim of the fall, Aniket Jadhav (19), suffered injuries to the back. “My bag saved me,” he said, since the bag broke his fall onto a road median. Mr. Jadhav is a student of KC College, and works as a part-time salesman to support his family. The Wadala resident took the bridge every day after work. “Next month I turn 20. I don’t know if I will still be in hospital,” he said.

Mohammad Azhar Khan (28) was on his way to visit his father, who is admitted to GT Hospital for the last five months after a gangrene surgery. He said, “I left home to take care of my father. Little did I know that I too will need help.” Mr. Khan has fractured both legs and has head injuries too. Doctors said he may need to be in hospital for three weeks.

Mohan Mirza (43) severely hurt his head and may have to undergo a neurosurgery. Mr. Mirza works and lives in a shop in Bhuleshwar. “I was going to CSMT to catch a train to my native place in West Bengal to see my son. My son hurt his leg in an accident. I wanted to go see him, but now I can’t.”
