According to the Thane Nagar police, the incident occurred in the four-storey police quarters around 10.30 a.m. Varsha Sagare, who stays in flat B-34 with her five-year-old son and husband, who is attached to Kongaon police station, was lying on the floor after finishing household work. A large chunk of plaster from the ceiling collapsed on their bed in the living room and a corner of it hit her forehead.

“The woman was rushed to Thane Civil Hospital by her husband and neighbours, where she was administered first aid. She was then shifted to a private hospital in Thane for dressing and stitching of the wound. Her condition is stable and she has been discharged,” an officer from Thane Nagar police station said.

Residents of the building said they had written to the Public Works Department (PWD) last year about the grim state of the ceiling on the top floor of the building.

Puja Wagh, former local corporator, said part of the passage slab plaster had come off outside the same house last week and another house on the second floor had experienced a similar incident around 10 days ago.

“The residents have said they had complained about the state of the ceiling to the PWD. The four floors of the building house eight to 10 flats, and there were similar complaints on Sunday,” Ms. Wagh said. The former corporator said they will meet the PWD chief this week seeking a proper survey and expeditious repair work of the building. “The family had sent their son on Saturday to a relative’s house. Children usually sit and lie on the bed and so do adults. The woman could have been grievously injured had she been lying on the bed,” Ms. Wagh said.
