Vashi dacoity: havaldar’s wife arrested

Con job: Kusum CHS at Sector 17, Vashi, where the house of an APMC trader was burgled last week.

Navi Mumbai: The Vashi police have arrested a woman for her involvement in the ₹2.09-crore dacoity at an APMC trader’s house in Sector 17. The woman identified as Anita Mhasane, wife of a havaldar attached to Khandeshwar police station, is believed to have tipped off the six accused.

Complainant Arun Menkudale was known to Ms. Mhasane. “Prima facie, it is believed that Ms. Mhasane, a Khandeshwar resident, tipped off the accused. We are investigating why she did this,” said an officer from Vashi police station.

Even as main accused was arrested, his accomplices who made away with the loot are still on the run. Around 10 teams have been working on the case.

The crime occurred when his wife and 22-year-old daughter were alone at their flat on the sixth floor of Kusum CHS on Friday afternoon.

A man and an woman on the pretext of delivering a courier, approached the family. Once the door was opened, four men who were hiding near the stairs, entered the flat and threatened them with a revolver and a knife. They made away with cash, gold, and silver worth ₹2.09 crore.

The accused were captured on CCTV. In the call records, it was revealed that Ms. Mhasane was in touch with them. She was produced before court and remanded in police custody till November 8. According to the police, Ms. Mhasane’s husband was unaware of his wife being involved in the crime.
