Work on revamp to be done quickly, says official

Senior Mumbai University (MU) officials on Monday carried out an inspection of the dilapidated Jawaharlal Nehru library in the university’s Kalina campus and promised its speedy revamp.

Following The Hindu ’s report on the library’s condition on May 13, Registrar Dr. Ajay Deshmukh, Director, Student Development, and other senior officials of the engineering section carried out the inspection.

“A thorough inspection of the library was done and the necessary action has been directed. The university is sensitive (about the library) and arrangements to help the students will be taken in the near future,” an MU official said.

The official said instructions have also been given for undertaking the work expeditiously. “To preserve the state of the books and facilities for students, the main stakeholders of the system, whatever is required will be undertaken by the MU administration,” the official added.

While the language books section remained shut after a portion of its ceiling collapsed last year, the passage on the first floor is in a bad state with old newspapers gathering dust. MU Senate member Vaibhav Thorat too wrote to Vice Chancellor Dr. Suhas Pednekar on Thursday, urging him to look into the crumbling state of the library urgently.
