Two arrested in Thane with 43 kg cannabis

The Thane Police Crime Branch on Wednesday arrested two persons for allegedly smuggling cannabis. The police recovered 43 kg of the drug from the duo hailing from Solapur

According to police officials, the arrested have been identified as Nakulsingh Rajput (23) and Mahendrasingh Rajput (26). The police said the arrests were made following a tip-off. Police constable Rizwan Sayyed of the Thane Police Crime Branch’s Anti Narcotics Cell received information that large quantities of cannabis was to be supplied to drug dealers and addicts in the Thane, Kalwa and Mumbra.

Trap laid

An officer with the Thane Police Crime Branch said, “We laid a trap near Amit Garden Hotel on Retibandar Road in Kalwa and intercepted two men who got off an autorickshaw at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday. The duo was carrying four bags, containing 21 blocks of a powdery substance wrapped in cellophane tape.”

The police seized the duo and the bags. They were taken to the ANC office in Thane, where the substance was examined and confirmed to be cannabis. The duo was arrested and charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The officer said, “Prima facie, it seems that the duo was acting on someone’s instructions. They carried the drugs to Thane and were going to sell them to drug dealers. We are interrogating the accused to identify other people connected with the case. We are trying to trace and apprehend them.”

The Thane police have also contacted the Solapur police and sought information about the criminal records of the arrested duo.
