Tight security in Mumbai ahead of voting day

The Mumbai police will deploy its entire force of 48,000 policemen to ensure that polls scheduled on April 24th pass off peacefully.

“Eight central paramilitary forces, 19 companies of SRPF (State Reserve Police Force), 5275 Home Guards, 250 Civil Defence officers, 108 flying squads and 108 static surveillance squads will be pressed into action on election day,” said Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria.

There are 9879 polling booths in the city of which 291 have been classified as sensitive. As many as 33 locations have been identified as vulnerable. The police have also formed flying squads, which will keep track of any malpractices during voting, the police said

Since March 5, the police have taken 14,860 people into preventive custody.

Following the Election Commission directives, the city police have impounded 1,564 weapon licences and have seized 50 illegal weapons.
