Transport projects worth ₹1.5 lakh crore under way

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said a slew of transport-related projects being undertaken in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will enable residents to travel to any place within the region in an hour’s time.

“We are creating a dense Metro network across the region, which will provide circular movement for all citizens. I am sure once all the Metro networks are operational, a person will be able travel between two places in MMR within an hour,” Mr. Fadnavis said.

He said the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) was executing projects worth ₹1.5 lakh crore inthe region, including around 160 km of Metro corridors and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.

The Chief Minister made the statement at a ceremony to lay the foundation for a new road to connect Kalyan and neighbouring regions to Navi Mumbai. He also laid the foundation stone for a new rail overbridge in Thane and inaugurated two flyovers and an underpass on Thane-Belapur Road.

He said the government was also keen on developing water transportation networks in the city. “We wanted to start the Ro-Ro ferry service on May 15, but for some reasons the ships got delayed. We will inaugurate the service soon.” Mr. Fadnavis said the government was also exploring other routes in Thane district and proposed a Ro-Ro ferry service for container trucks to reduce congestion in the city.
