Seven more held in attack on Trombay police station

Mumbai: The Trombay police on Monday made seven more arrests in connection with the alleged vandalism of the police station on Saturday night.

The group of 17 people, which was allegedly led by All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul-Muslimeen corporator Shahnavaz Hussein, is accused of marching to the police station to protest an objectionable post on Facebook. The group vandalised the police station and set police vehicles on fire. Tension prevailed in the area till late on Sunday morning. The 17 people, including Hussein, were arrested on Sunday.

“We have arrested seven more accused in connection with the incident. Further inquiries are underway,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Shahaji Umap, Zone VI. The police have charged the arrested accused with rioting, damage to property and using violent force to deter public servants from discharging their duty under the Indian Penal Code. They have been remanded in police custody till March 24. The police are investigating if the mob was incited by anti-social elements to create unrest.
