Seven companies are in the fray to bag the contract to provide driverless train sets for Metro corridors 2A and 7. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) last week opened the tenders for 63 sets in Delhi.

Both Metro lines are currently under construction, Line 2A is being built on Link Road and Line 7 on Western Express Highway. Each line is expected to cost around ₹6,000 crore.

“We have received excellent response to the rolling stock tender and are extremely happy to ensure timely completion of both the projects,” R.A.Rajeev, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, said. The bidders are Hyundai Rotem; Bombardier India & Bombardier Germany; CRRC Corporation Ltd; Bharat Earth Movers Ltd; Titagarh wagons & Titagarh Firemal; Alstom Transport India & Alstom SA; and CAF India & CAF Spain.

The bidding process was carried as per norms set by the Asian Development Bank, which is funding the corridors. MMRDA is finalising a contractor, who is expected to provide 378 coaches, i.e. 63 train sets of six coaches each. Though the train sets will have driverless technology, MMRDA officials said the trains will have drivers.
