‘Sea rally’ against Jaitapur project

May 28, 2015 02:08 am | Updated May 30, 2015 12:28 pm IST - MUMBAI:

Fishermen too join protest against nuclear plant

A week after the gram sabhas of villages surrounding the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project (JNPP) site passed a resolution against the project, fishermen will hold a ‘sea rally,’ demanding that the JNPP be stopped.

On Friday, fishermen from Sakhari Natye, Natye, Tulsunde and Sagve villages will protest in the sea that surrounds the project site. The protesters will form a circle around the site in the sea.“We fishermen too are going to suffer because of this project. We want to send a clear message to the government that we will not let the project happen. We have arranged this ‘sea rally’ as a mark of protest,” said Mansoor Solkar, a fisherman from Sakhari Natye village.

The fishermen want to highlight the destruction of marine ecology due to this project.

Earlier last week, gram sabhas of Madban and Mithgavhane passed a resolution against project. “Accepting compensation package from the government does not mean we have agreed to the nuclear power project in our backyard,” said the resolutions.

The strong reactions from the villagers are the result of recent statements by various BJP leaders, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that the JNPP would go ahead at any cost.

The BJP’s ally Shiv Sena has clarified that it will continue its opposition to the project.
