Say detailed medical assessment is crucial to prevent ‘misinformation’

Mumbai: Doctors at Saifee Hospital will be given a detailed medical assessment report by Abu Dhabi-based Burjeel Hospital, where Egyptian national Eman Ahmed is likely to be shifted soon. The report will be studied and signed to remove any scope for misinformation.

“We are still awaiting the report from the Abu Dhabi team,” Dr. Aparna Govil, one of the 13 doctors attending Ms. Ahmed at Saifee Hospital since her arrival in the city for weight loss treatment. “The assessment report is important. They [Abu Dhabi doctors] shouldn’t say later that the patient was critical or not fit. Ms. Ahmed is doing very well and her vitals are stable. We will study their assessment first before doing anything further.”

She added that according to reports in the media, Ms, Ahmed will be undergoing a lifesaving surgery and doctors in Abu Dhabi have promised to make her walk. “I don’t know about this surgery,” Dr. Govil said.

Ms. Ahmed is likely to leave for Abu Dhabi on Sunday, though her sister Shaimaa Selim said a date was yet to be fixed. Before landing in Mumbai, Ms. Ahmed reportedly weighed 500 kg, and her current weight is 176 kg. She was brought to Mumbai on February 11 and underwent bariatric surgery on March 7. While doctors maintained her progress has been good, the relationship between Saifee Hospital and Ms. Selim soured after the latter circulated a video in which she claimed her sister’s condition was critical.

“All this only shows that social media can be used to tarnish anyone’s image. We’ve done our best for Eman and will pray that she gets better,” Dr. Govil said.
