Senior Police Inspector Lalasaheb Shetye said, “Amreen was walking through the gap between two buses parked one behind the other. Suddenly the bus in front reversed and she was crushed between the two buses.”

Amreen was rushed to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla, where she was declared dead before admission.

Kurla police registered a case of death owing to rash and negligent driving against the bus driver under sections of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

BEST spokesperson Hanumant Gophane said, “We have initiated a departmental inquiry into the incident. We will decide on the course of action once the inquiry report is filed.”

A BEST official on condition of anonymity said that such accidents were not common as the conductor usually ensures the path is clear before the bus reverses. The inquiry will look into whether a conductor was present in the bus.
