Love in the time of refuse: The high tide, swollen by the spate of heavy rain over the weekend, washed a huge amount of garbage onto Juhu beach on Monday.

Mumbai: After a wet weekend, the city and its suburbs continued to receive intermittent showers on Monday, taking the seasonal rainfall total to 665.8 mm.

According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) regional centre here, Colaba and Santacruz received 7.4 mm and 6.2 mm rainfall between 8.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m. Private weather forecaster Skymet said the last 24 hours were proof of the Mumbai rains being back with a bang. “During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Santacruz observatory recorded a good 52 mm of rain,” Skymet said.

These weather conditions have been attributed to the presence of a cyclonic circulation over the Gujarat coast. Also, the offshore trough along the west coast, right from Gujarat to Kerala, which has further intensified the southwest monsoon, is also currently active.

The weather bureau predicted heavy to very heavy rain for the entire north Konkan region including Mumbai. “We have also issued warnings for extremely heavy rain at isolated locations in the district. Mumbai too, can expect extremely heavy rain till Tuesday,” K.S. Hosalikar, Deputy Director-General (Western Region), IMD said.

Fishermen have also been asked to not venture into the seas till Wednesday due to strong winds along the coastline. Despite the heavy rains that Mumbai has witnessed, Colaba still has a -111.3 mm departure from normal and Santacruz -85.7 mm .
