Mumbai: One person has been arrested from Pune in connection with the murder of a history sheeter on Parola Road in Dhule district earlier this week. Dhule Police said the accused is a member of a rival gang. Rafiquddin Shaikh alias Guddya, 35, who was recently released from prison, was hacked to death allegedly by members of a rival gang at a tea stall on July 18.
During the investigation, police received information about Pawar’s whereabouts, and a team was sent to Kamshet to arrest him.
“Sagar Sahebrao Pawar alias Kalti, was arrested from Kamshet in Pune. He was among the gang members who attacked Shaikh with a sword which was recorded in a CCTV,” SP (Dhule) M. Ramkumar said on Saturday. Pawar, one of the prime accused, is seen in red t-shirt while the crime was being perpetrated. He fled the district soon after, Mr. Ramkumar said. He added that during his interrogation, Pawar provided important leads that will help arrest the remaining accused.

A video of Shaikh being attacked by rival gang members was captured by a CCTV camera and had gone viral on social media. During the investigation, it was revealed that Shaikh led a gang of his own and there was a constant fight for supremacy between the gangs in Dhule, he added.
On July 18, members of the rival gang fired three rounds at Shaikh, hitting him twice. This was followed by a gang of 11 to 12 attacking Shaikh with swords and sickles, he said. The whole incident, which lasted for around a minute, was recorded in the CCTV, he added. Shaikh was rushed to a government hospital in Dhule where he was declared dead before admission.
The police, after viewing CCTV footage and recording statements of eyewitnesses, registered a case of murder, Mr. Ramkumar said. Based on the CCTV footage, police have identified five accused, who are history-sheeters, and have formed special teams to nab them.
