Mumbai: A weekend outing turned into a tragedy for three teenagers from Dharavi after all of them drowned in the sea at the Dadar Chowpatty on Saturday morning.
According to the Mahim police, the trio, identified as Bharat Hanumanta (13), Anup Yadav (16), and Rohit Yadav (15), were students of a municipal school in Dharavi. The three boys attended school on Saturday morning and then decided to go to the chowpatty.
“At around 11.30 a.m., some people on the beach noticed that the three boys had entered the water and were visibly struggling to break free after being caught in the waves. A couple of them rushed in to try and save them, while the others called the fire brigade,” said an officer with the Mahim police.

Fire officials said a fire engine along with a rescue boat was rushed to the spot.
The people who tried to save the boys were unable to reach them, and the boat crew found Hanumanta floating in the waves around an hour later. He was rushed to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra where he was declared dead before admission.
A short while later, Anup and Rohit, who were brothers, were pulled out from the water. The doctor on board the ambulance, which was sent to the spot, declared them dead and their bodies were taken to KEM Hospital in Parel.

Police officers said the trio were identified on the basis of their school identity cards that they were carrying on their person. The police then obtained contact details of their parents from their school and contacted the parents, who reached the hospitals to claim their bodies.
The Mahim police have registered accidental death reports.
