Mumbai: Power was restored to over 95% of households across Vasai, Nalasopara and Virar after supply was discontinued due to heavy rainfall on Tuesday. Over three lakh people were affected after the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. (MSEDCL) cut power to the Vasai sub-station as a precautionary measure.
Vishwajeet Bhosale, PRO, MSEDCL, said, “By 8.30 p.m. power supply was restored to most households as power to all 16 feeder routes in the area was restored. In some low-lying areas, the transformer pillar is still under water and supply will only be resumed once it recedes. Our staff and officers are monitoring the situation.”
Vasai-Virar recorded 242 mm rainfall on Tuesday. Heavy waterlogging was reported at Dindayal Nagar in Vasai, Gala Nagar and Central park in Nalasopara, Virar (W) among other areas. Three people died in separate incidents. People experienced erratic water supply and mobile network failure, among other hardships.

Satish Lokhande, Municipal Commissioner, Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC), said, “There were two reasons for this flooding. The railways’ culverts are too small, which is why the east side was cut off due to heavy waterlogging. High tide and rainfall on the west side led to flooding as well. Low-lying areas get flooded every year. Many residents of salt pan areas refuse to vacate their homes despite warnings. They have been rescued.”
