Civic staff to motivate citizens to follow their example

Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has instructed its 2,400 permanent employees to start composting biodegradable waste generated in their homes at source.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Ankush Chavan said, “We practice what we preach.” He said the corporation has been striving to completely segregate waste at source for quite some time now. However, citizens have doubts about composting at source, and hence the NMMC has urged its staff to set an example for citizens.

He said NMMC employees have to start composting wet waste in three weeks. The corporation will not provide them compost bins, but have been trained in the procedure. Civic officials are confident that the step will bring about positive change.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Solid waste Management and Tree Authority) Tushar Pawar said, “This is not the first such measure the NMMC has taken. Nearly 80 kg kitchen waste that is generated in the headquarters at CBD Belapur every day is converted into biogas within the premises.”

NMMC will soon start a vermicompost facility at the headquarters for garden waste, Mr. Pawar said.
