In a first, the BMC organised a workshop for 482 Haj Committee volunteers from 29 states, with a live demonstration on the dos and don’ts for those undertaking the annual pilgrimage to Mecca as well as handy tips on tackling natural disasters. Over 1.8 lakh Indians go on the Haj pilgrimage every year.

The half-day workshop was included in the three-day programme organised annually by the Haj Committee (HC) for the first time. A senior BMC official said the decision to hold the workshop was based on the disaster last year in Mecca when a crane collapsed, killing many pilgrims, and stampede incidents in the recent past.

Tips were offered on minor details like effectively using the two-piece white Irham garb worn by pilgrims, should disaster strike. An official said, “We provided practical tips such as using the Irham as bandaging material, for tying open wounds and even using the garment as a stretcher.”

The workshop also trained volunteers to cope with fire incidents and stampedes. An official said as per information available with them, fires are unlikely as tents for pilgrims are made of fireproof material. “All the same, it is important to know how to remain calm, not believe rumours and keeping emergency numbers handy. These tips could help a lot should a calamity strike again,” he said, adding BMC has received letters of appreciation from the Puducherry and Uttar Pradesh Haj Committees for the workshop.
