The Maharashtra government on Monday announced a Crime Branch inquiry into the Damu Nagar fire incident in Mumbai.

Around 2,000 slums were gutted and two people lost their lives in the slum fire, two weeks ago.

Following the incident, BJP MLA Ashish Shelar had said that he suspected a builder’s hand in the fire since the slum was under negotiations for redevelopment scheme.

Replying to the attention motion called by local Shiv Sena MLA Prakash Surve, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the incident will be probed by the Crime Branch since possibility of foul play cannot be ruled out.

Mr Fadnavis has also called a meeting of local elected representatives, government officers, and locals on Tuesday to discuss compensation package and resettlement of the slum dwellers.
