Girls have done better than boys yet again in the Maharashtra board’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination, results of which were announced on Monday. Overall, 91.41 per cent female students passed, compared to 87.98 per cent male students.

The overall pass percentage has, however, dropped by around three per cent when compared to the 2015 results, with 14,34,143 of the 16,01,406 students, or 89.56 per cent, who appeared for SSC 2016 clearing it. The results were similar to the recently-declared HSC results in that the Konkan division returned the best results among nine educational divisions with 96.56 per cent students clearing the exam. Last year, the division had recorded 96.54 per cent results. Latur was at the bottom of the list with a pass percentage of 81.54 per cent; the division had recorded an 86.38-per cent pass percentage in 2015.

In Mumbai, of the 3,23,955 students who appeared for the examination, around 2,97,719 students passed. As per available data, city junior colleges have around 2,69,172 seats comprising 34,069 (Arts), 81,431 (Science) and 1,53,672 (Commerce).

It was a special day for Swami Vivekanand High School in Chembur as around 15 dyslexic students scored more than 80 per cent in the examination. “The excellent marks attained by these students speak of their grit, hard work and determination to succeed against all odds. Right from the start of the academic year, the children were steadfast in their studies and did not miss out on any lessons. Teachers took extra efforts in explaining the finer points of each subject, which helped students gain a deeper understanding of each topic and sub-topic,” Principal Cynthia Dawson said.
