Four persons including a Mumbai Police constable were killed in an accident at Lonavala on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, early on Saturday.
According to the Lonavala city police, the mishap occurred around 1.40 a.m. on Saturday. They said a Santro travelling towards Pune rammed into the back of a trailer at high speed, resulting in serious injuries to all four occupants of the car. The police were informed by the driver of the trailer, and several Lonavala city police teams were rushed to the spot along with ambulances. All four occupants were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead before admission.
Based on documents including driving licenses and PAN cards, the police identified the deceased as Rajendra Chavan, 47, his wife Vanita, 42, Shankar Vangule, 33, and his wife Pooja, 26. All four succumbed to internal injuries and heavy loss of blood, police said. A police officer said Mr. Chavan was a constable with the Marol unit of the Mumbai Police’s Local Arms division, and lived in Marol with his wife. The Vangules were residents of Mahad, Raigad.

The police have not registered an FIR in the matter yet, but a Fatal Accident Report has been recorded. The officer added, “Since all four occupants of the car are dead, ascertaining the exact cause of the accident is proving to be difficult. We have not found any witnesses apart from the trailer driver, as there were not many vehicles on the highway at the time. We are still trying to locate anyone who might have actually seen the accident occur. The car is expected to be examined by a forensic tam in the next two days.”
