Senior Nationalist Congress Party leader Chhagan Bhujbal, currently in judicial custody after being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate, was on Monday admitted to St George Hospital after he complained of chest pain and uneasiness. He was subsequently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, and will remain under observation for one or two days, said doctors.
“Mr Bhujbal was brought to the hospital on Monday afternoon. After a preliminary check-up, we found that he had high blood pressure and other health complications, including changes in his ECG, following which we admitted him to the ICU,” said Dr JB Bhavani, superintendent of St George Hospital.
Dr Rohan Sequeira, who is attending to Mr Bhujbal, said his blood pressure was the main cause of concern. “He is 69 years old and has a history of heart problems and bronchial asthma. He is suffering from six-seven ailments, the most serious being high blood pressure and diabetes. We will need to keep him under observation for one or two days before we can take a call on further course of action.”

Mr Bhujbal was arrested by the ED on March 14 after a 10-hour grilling session at the agency’s Mumbai office. A day after his arrest, he was admitted to JJ Hospital after he complained of chest pain and uneasiness, and was discharged after a day.
He was booked in connection with the alleged laundering of the proceeds that he is accused of having received in kickbacks in exchange for awarding choice tenders to select contractors during his tenure as Public Works Department minister. His nephew Sameer was also arrested by the ED earlier this year and both of them were lodged in the Arthur Road Jail.
