MNS asked to pay for vandalising toll booths

The Mumbai suburban Collector has asked the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to pay for the damage caused to toll booths across the city last month during the its recent agitation.

“We have sent them a recovery notice under Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, asking them to pay Rs. 3.9 lakh for damaging the toll booths,” suburban Collector Sanjay Deshmukh told The Hindu.

Mr. Deshmukh said party members would have to appear before his office within seven days from receiving the notice, failing which they could be prosecuted or their property confiscated. The notice was issued against 13 MNS office bearers for vandalising toll booths at the Bandra-Worli sea link, Vashi, Airoli and Dahisar.

MNS leader Nitin Sardesai, however, said the party had not received any notice and would reply once he received it. Party toll booths, accusing the government of collecting money for the benefit of private contractors and looting general public.

Party chief Raj Thackeray had instructed his partymen to beat up toll attendants if they force vehicle owners to pay the toll.
