MIAL sustainability report: 10% increase in air traffic movement

Airport has spent over ₹38 million on CSR during 2016-18

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) on Tuesday released its Sustainability Report-2018 mapping it’s contribution to sustainable development goals.

In the 108-page report that it brings out once in every two years, MIAL said that Mumbai airport recorded a 22% increase in domestic passengers and a 13% increase in international passengers during the reporting period 2016-18 as compared to the previous 2014-16.

With 969 aircraft movements in a day, MIAL has the highest for a single runway airport in the world. The report shows a 10% increase in air traffic movement and a 21% increase in cargo.

Around 94,986 man-hours of training was imparted to employees in the reporting period, according to the report. Additionally, over ₹38 million was spent on corporate social responsibility initiatives during the reporting period. A 3,205 kWp capacity solar power plant was installed, increasing the total renewable energy by 200%. A 1,381 kWp capacity of solar power plant under process. There was a 16% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. MIAL also engages in 93% procurement from local suppliers.

MIAL is the first and only airport operator in India to publish its sustainability report in the public domain and has been doing so since 2012. The report is themed – ‘Coming Together for a Sustainable Tomorrow’ and showcases the performance and achievements for financial year 2016–17 and 2017–18. Through the report, MIAL aims to keep its stakeholders updated on its progress on vital sustainability issues such as climate change, safety and security, environment and health.

R.K. Jain, chief executive officer, has been quoted in the report saying, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is one of the most land constrained airports in the world when it comes to operations. Regardless of this, we have maintained a biennial growth rate of over 16% as compared to previous reporting cycles, thereby handling more than 93 million passengers collectively during FY 2016-17 and FY 2017-18. Passenger traffic dynamics has continued to remain robust, which has empowered CSMIA as a premier international aviation hub.”

Through the report, which has been developed as per the latest Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) standards, MIAL has demonstrated its commitment towards Sustainable Development Goals. Based on GRI database, MIAL said that it was the first airport operator in Asia to release the report according to GRI standards. The report is externally assured by Bureau Veritas (India) Private Limited.
