Mumbai: Nineteen establishments and 634 families in Girgaon and Kalbadevi will be provided with in-situ rehabilitation to make way for the construction of the Mumbai Metro 3 from Colaba to Seepz.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) on Tuesday announced the appointment of GD Sambhare and RH Mahimatura as architects for the Kalbadevi-Girgaum rehabilitation scheme. The tender was floated in June 2017, and the scope of the contract includes planning and architectural design, structural design, construction supervision and management (PMC) of buildings to be redeveloped.
Part of the lands of impacted buildings would be utilised by the MMRC for underground metro stations, ancillary works, ventilation shafts, entry and exit structures, and other related activities. The redevelopment will be undertaken simultaneously in the remaining lands and after completion, will be allotted to the affected families by 2021.

“We are delighted to announce the appointment of architects for the redevelopment of properties occupied by families affected by the proposed construction of Kalbadevi and Girgaum metro stations. The rehabilitation plan has been finalised keeping in mind the concerns raised by the project-affected families. We, at MMRC, are committed to completing the rehabilitation in a time-bound manner,” said Ashwini Bhide, managing director, MMRC.
Civil work of piling, station, and building tunnel boring shafts have begun for the proposed 27 stations for the underground route.
The old residential and commercial areas in South Mumbai are among the most-congested.

“The road width is 27.4 metres with only 11 metres open space available for the metro construction, which is not enough,” said Ms. Bhide.
