Meera Sanyal, Mayank Gandhi to contest from Mumbai

February 15, 2014 03:24 am | Updated May 18, 2016 08:25 am IST - Mumbai

Medha Patkar likely to join AAP soon

The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday named the former banker, Meera Sanyal, as its south Mumbai candidate and the former builder, Mayank Gandhi, as the nominee in Mumbai Northwest in the general election.

While Mr. Gandhi is a first-timer, for Ms. Sanyal, it is a second attempt at parliamentary elections. She stood against Congress MP Milind Deora in 2009, first election after 26/11 which resulted in nationwide outrage.

“We can and must participate constructively, not just in the political debate, but in the process itself. India is at a tipping point. It is now time for all of us to defend our country,” she said.

Narmada Bachao Andolan leader and slum activist Medha Patkar has already decided to contest the elections. Although she hasn’t announced the constituency or even the party, a source close to her said she would most likely join the AAP in a few days.

An AAP insider said the decision would be announced on February 19 by national executive member Yogendra Yadav.

“She is most likely to contest from Mumbai Northeast, where she has a strong hold. It has several slums,” said the source.
