Mumbai: Buying a water bottle at the Borivali station has proved fatal for a 40-year-old passenger, who was killed under the wheel of the Gujrat Mail after he lost his balance while trying to get into the train.
According to the railway police, Mahesh Atra, a resident of Ahmedabad, was travelling by Gujrat Mail (12901) and when the train halted at Borivali, Atra got down to buy a water bottle. “He gave ₹100 to stall staff and took a bottle. In return, the staff gave him the balance money,” said a railway police official. As soon as he took the bottle and the balance money in his hand, he saw the train started moving. He rushed to catch the train carrying a bottle in one hand and the money in another. “He tried boarding the train, but lost his balance and slipped below the train,” said the official. Eyewitnesses said the man went between the train and the platform, and he rolled for sometime before going on to the track. He body was cut in two pieces when the railway police visited the place.
His body was identified through the documents he was carrying and his family was informed in Ahmedabad. “We have seen the CCTV footage and registered a case of accidental death,” said the official. Atra was in Mumbai for some business at Bhiwandi. The incident occurred at platform number 6 at 11.05 p.m. His body was sent to B.R. Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali for post-mortem.
