A 27-year-old gym trainer died on Tuesday after succumbing to burn injuries sustained after his bike caught fire on falling into an open manhole at Sector 21 in Ulwe. The deceased, identified as Mohan Rathod, a resident of Ulwe, was on his way home from work at around 12.30 a.m. when the accidemt took place.
Senior Police Inspector Smita Jadhav of NRI police station said, “Rathod was riding his bike and was on his way home in Ulwe. Suddenly his bike fell into an open manhole and the petrol tank of the bike went up in flames. In a few seconds, Rathod’s body sustained severe burn injuries which led to his death.”
The police said that passers-by and nearby residents heard Rathod’s cries and came to his rescue. They tried to douse the flame with water. The fire brigade too reached the spot, but couldn’t prevent Rathod from suffering burns. By the time the fire was doused, Rathod had succumbed to his injuries.

Ms. Jadhav said, “We have registered a case of negligence against the CIDCO contractor who was incharge of maintaining the road. The name of the contractor is not yet known. We have requested CIDCO to give us his details.””
Pradeep Kannalu, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Control Room), said, “Rathod’s wife is police constable Sharmila Naik Rathod, who is attached to Navi Mumbai police control room. The family left for Usmanabad, their native place, for final rites. Our staff paid a condolence visit to Ms. Sharmila and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter.”
Rathod worked with the Nerul Branch of Talwalkar gym as a trainer.
