A major fire broke out in an industrial compound in Mulund on Saturday night. Fire fighting operations were under way at the time of going to press.

According to Fire Brigade officials, the fire broke out at around 9 p.m. on Saturday in a factory unit on the first floor of Shanti Industrial Estate in Mulund (West).

A Fire Brigade official said, “Our personnel reached the spot by 9.10 p.m. and the fire was declared a Level II emergency by 9.21 p.m. Even as we were trying to bring it under control, the blaze intensified and spread to around seven other units. We declared it a Level III emergency by 10.10 p.m.”

The official added that the affected units contained flammable material such as plastic, garments and chemicals and added to the intensity of the fire.

He said, “Nine fire tenders, six jumbo tankers and two water tankers have been pressed into service. We have ambulances on standby in case there are any casualties.”
