A major fire broke out at the Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) refinery in Chembur around 2.45 pm on Wednesday.
The fire was declared ‘level III’ or major.
43 workers have been reported injured due to impact. After preliminary treatment at BPCL First Aid Centre, 22 were allowed to go home. 21 were shifted to Inlax hospital, Chembur.

8 fire engines from BPCL, HPCL, BARC, RCF, BMC & Mazgaon Dock with 4 BMC tankers took efforts to extinguish the fire. The fire has been confined to a hydrogen tank inside BPCL refinery. Fire brigade has reported some explosions at the spot but more details are awaited. There are no casualties reported yet.
“It happened due to a blast in the hydrogen unit of the refinery. No casualties are reported so far. Things are under control now,” said a BPCL official.
