Mumbai: Maharashtra government is mulling over an option to make it mandatory for all industries to register with the government’s website created to ensure apprenticeship for new and young talent, fresh out of college.
At a meeting with representatives from the industries on Friday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis set the target for the number of apprentices in the state at seven lakh. The government has also asked industries to register at the central government’s web portal to ensure there are more opportunities for new talent.
Skill Development Minister Sambhaji Patil-Nilangekar clarified that similar meetings will be held over the next fortnight in all six revenue divisions where industry leaders from the respective areas will be called. “Maharashtra has the largest industrial units and it is the responsibility of these industries to create large number of skilled human resources. Since Maharashtra State Council for Vocational Training has a right to decide on the curriculum, the industrialists can come forward with training programs necessary for their respective businesses. The government can make necessary changes,” the minister said.

Key issues discussed in the meeting include increasing the number of female apprentices, offering the apprenticeship for two to three months as well as for six months, shifts to be offered for apprentices and various apprenticeship programs of the central government.
An official who attended the meeting said the government wants as many industries as possible to register with the web portal. “This will have dual impact as it will tackle the notion that new talent is not getting work and in addition the industry too will have direct availability of human resource which is important for their businesses,” the officer said, adding that the skilled workforce will help in easing the burden of increasing unemployed population.
